So why are we are still being treated as second class citizens.
More women then men turn out to vote. We have a female Speaker of the House for the first time in history. Still, women only make up 16 % of the U.S. Senate, 16% of the House of Representatives, and less than 24% of state legislators. Only 8 of the nation’s governors are women. And we have yet to election a woman to the White House.
Women make up half of law school graduates and roughly 1/3 are lawyers. But only 15% of these women lawyers have partnerships in law firms or are federal judges.
Women have worked for centuries without any acknowledgement or financial gain. The work that women do in the home for the benefit of the family isn’t even called work. At a dinner party or a social gathering, women are asked … “Do you work …. Or are you a stay-at-home mom?” Yet, a stay-at-home mom is on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and works an average of 100 hours a week. According to studies done by a number of different universities and research analysis companies such as www.salary.com the annual salary of a “home maker” or “stay-at–home mom” if she did get paid would be around $131,500.00.
Insurance companies will pay for Viagra and other erection enhancement drugs but many insurance companies still refuse to pay for birth control for women.
Male pharmacists are refusing to fill prescriptions for birth control saying it offends their religious values.
Women still earn less pay than men do, doing the same job. Women receive 77 cent for every dollar a man receives.
Women are underrepresented in science and math fields which tend to lead to better paying careers. In spite of the fact that girls are finally catching up to boys in taking college level math and science classes in high school, only 2/5 of science and engineering graduate are women.
The Equal Rights Amendment was first introduced to Congress in 1923. It read: Equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or any State on account of sex. The Amendment failed to get the necessary two-thirds vote in order for the amendment to become law.
85 years later and we are still being treated as second class citizens.
