How To Pay For College

Maybe you are lucky and come from a family that has set aside money for you to go to college, any school you want. Your grades are good, your application has been approved and you are just waiting for the big day to arrive.

Most of us are not so lucky. So, for those of us who do not have a college fund waiting for us, we have to get creative.

The best and first way is to earn a scholarship. There are both full scholarships and partial scholarships. Scholarships can be earned by a wide range of things. Earning and maintaining a high grade point average and through sport activities and achievements are two of the most common and well known types of scholarships. But, they are just two of hundreds, even thousands that exist. Whatever you are interested in, or whatever you are good at, with just a bit of research, you will probably find there is a scholarship available out there that you can apply for.

Next, there are grants. Grants can be from the government or some organization. It can be from a university or from a Trust in memory of someone. It is money given to you to pay for college tuition and books that you don’t have to pay back. Grants are like people, they come in all sizes, shapes and colors. There are grants because you are female or Jewish, or Black or because you are from Detroit or bi-lingual or because you are interested in horses or astronomy or math or any of the sciences. Check out www.awm-math.org if you are interested in math and science.

At some colleges, student jobs are available that can help pay for college.

You could work part time and go to school part time.

You can take most of your required general education classes and some electives at the local community college then transfer to a state college later. The cost per unit for a class at a community college is more affordable than that same class at a state college or university.

Student loans are also available, but check around to make sure you get the best interest rate possible. Many students graduate owning tens of thousands of dollars in debt.

Where there is the determination and desire, there is a way.

Here are some websites you can check out to help pay for college. There are many more out there. Be aware that some sites are free and some require payment for the same info you can get elsewhere for free. The Financial Aid office at the college you are interested in will have tons of free information for you. The library on campus will have both books and websites information that you can look at. If there is a local community college, even if you aren’t sure what your plans are yet, it would be another great place for free help on getting money for college.
